Orange Beach City Schools set to host 2nd annual Island Schools Special Olympics

Orange Beach City Schools has announced the eagerly awaited return of the Island Schools Special Olympics, scheduled for May 7, at the Orange Beach Sportsplex.

According to a news release, this anticipated event will see athletes from Gulf Shores City Schools and Orange Beach City Schools coming together in a celebration of unity, determination and the pure thrill of competition.

Superintendent Randy Wilkes expressed gratitude for the collective effort that went into organizing this event.

"Due to their unwavering dedication and tireless efforts, teachers, faculty and staff were able to instill a deep appreciation for the talents of all participants, making the Special Olympics a truly rewarding and unforgettable experience for everyone involved," Wilkes said in the release.

The Island Schools Special Olympics promises to be a heartwarming display of skill, where athletes of diverse abilities will have the opportunity to showcase their talents in a supportive and inclusive environment. Beyond the athletic achievements, this event serves as a catalyst for promoting acceptance and understanding within the community. Organizers of the event firmly believe in the unifying force of sports, transcending barriers and fostering a sense of togetherness.

The Opening Ceremony of the Island Schools Special Olympics is scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m. on May 7, 2024, at the Orange Beach Sportsplex, conveniently located at 4385 William Silvers Parkway.
