The saga of William “Billy” Boyette came to a close Tuesday evening in West Point, Ga., as Boyette was pronounced dead from a self-inflicted gun shot wound.

For over a week, Gulf Coast residents in Florida and Alabama were on high alert, as Boyette and his believed accomplice Mary Rice allegedly killed four women across the area.

Reports from the Troup County Sheriff’s Office confirmed Tuesday afternoon that Boyette and Rice had been located at the West Point Motel in West Point, Ga.

West Point Motel owner Danny Patel said the pair checked into the motel Monday afternoon.

“My wife and my aunt were working, and my aunt actually checked them in between 2:30 and 3 p.m. on Monday,” Patel said. “Everything was smooth. They weren’t jittery, they didn’t act like they were trying to flee from a crime. They were just kind of chill.”

Patel said his wife got a call to go and fix a remote in the room later that day.

“It’s kind of scary now that you think about it,” Patel said. “She went in there and fixed it. No harm was done, and everything was fine.”

Tuesday morning, Patel said the pair decided to stay another night.

“The lady (Rice) came around between 7 and 8 a.m. to pay for another night,” Patel said. “That’s when my wife had actually eye-witnessed her. When the police interviewed us yesterday, that’s when she confirmed that’s who she had been interacting with.”

Patel said his first interactions with law enforcement came around 2:30 p.m. Tuesday.

“They told me they were looking for the couple with the white Cobalt and wanted to know the room number, and I told them 12,” Patel said. “They ran the tags, and that was the one stolen in Florida. They moved in shortly after that and just sort of waited and waited before they took action.”

Patel said he was concerned there could be a shootout and had moved several motel guests to the other side of the facility and told them to stay away from the windows.

“It’s a good thing it ended up being a peaceful transaction,” Patel said. “The lady walked out and as soon as she walked out, from what I’ve been told, the gentleman just shot himself. It’s all over. They’ve caught them, and it’s done.”

Rice was taken into custody by Troup County officials and was being assessed.

Boyette and Rice’s alleged killing spree began Tuesday, Jan. 31 when Boyette allegedly killed Alicia Greer and Jacqueline Moore at the Emerald Sands Inn in Milton, Fla.

The pair’s next alleged killing occurred in Lillian on Friday, Feb. 3 when Peggy Broz was killed at her home.

On the morning of Monday, Feb. 6, Boyette allegedly shot mother of two Kayla Crocker during a home invasion and stole her car, the Chevy Cobalt the pair used to drive to West Point. Crocker died Tuesday evening from injuries sustained from the shooting.

The Baldwin County District Attorney’s office announced Rice would be facing capital murder charges for the attack on Broz, while she is like to face premeditated murder charges on the Milton killings.
