DAPHNE, Ala. — When Bayside Academy’s top-ranked and defending state champion (Class 3A) Admirals won their 2017 Battle by the Bay tournament Sept. 16, head coach Ann Schilling also reached career win No. 1,400.
The milestone victory was also the annual Bayside tournament's championship match win in three sets over Spanish Fort.
Two of Schilling’s players also reached and surpassed key statistical milestones. Senior setter Ansleigh Dailey surpassed 5,000 career assists. She is one of only four players (including her predecessor at Bayside - Sydney Chandler, 2009-13 with 7,505) in AHSAA history to reach the 5K plateau.
Dailey’s front-row teammate Brantley Rhodes has been one recipient of those 5,000 assists. Rhodes surpassed the 1,000 kills mark last week.
Schilling and this 2017 team is hoping to add another state-title banner to the walls of Bayside’s Moorer Gym in Daphne. If they do it will be the 16th consecutive state volleyball championship for Bayside and the 26th in school history. Schilling has coached the Admirals to 21 of the school’s 24 state blue-map trophies. She also has led Bayside to four runner-up trophies at Bayside.
