Baldwin County Amateur Radio Club holds annual event this weekend

Posted

During the fourth full weekend in June, the attention of the amateur radio community turns to its annual Field Day remote operating event. With the establishment of the amateur radio service in the 1930’s, this event and been conducted to test the field preparedness and emergency communications skills of the amateur radio community.

Over time, Field Day, has evolved into the largest on-the-air remote operation event of the year. In 2018, over 3,000 clubs, groups and individuals across the US and Canada participated. The purpose remains today as it did in the beginning: to demonstrate the communications ability of the amateur radio community in simulated emergency situations.

Amateur radio, also known as ham radio, makes use of certain radio frequencies for purposes of non-commercial exchange of messages, wireless experimentation, self-education, contesting, and emergency communication.

This year, the Baldwin County Amateur Radio Club (headquartered in Robertsdale) will conduct its field day event at Camp Silver Creek Boy Scouts camp in Silverhill (16914 Co Rd 52, Silverhill, AL) on Saturday, June 22 and Sunday June 23.

Club members will once again setup temporary radio stations and generators to support their effort to reach out to other amateur radio operators, "hams," all across the country. Local "hams" will be available to talk with the public about the hobby, to answer technical questions, and to explain how the amateur radio community assists local emergency personnel with communications during natural and weather disasters.

Activities will begin on Saturday around noon and on Sunday around 10 a.m. The public is welcome to attend for free.
