MOBILE, Alabama — A Baldwin County man was sentenced in federal court on March 2 to 180 months in prison after pleading guilty to conspiracy to possess with the intent to distribute methamphetamine.

U.S. Attorney Richard W. Moore of the Southern District of Alabama announced that Jerry Heath Dempsey was sentenced to 180 months of imprisonment on March 2. Dempsey pled guilty to the charge of conspiracy to possess with the intent to distribute methamphetamine in May 2019. U.S. District Court Judge Jeffrey U. Beaverstock imposed the sentence and ordered that when Dempsey is released from imprisonment, he will serve five years of supervised release.

Court records established that on Feb. 7, 2019, Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office Deputies stopped the defendant in Baldwin County in a traffic stop. During the stop the officers developed suspicions as to drug trafficking and asked and received consent to search the defendant's vehicle.

During the search officers recovered approximately 6 ounces of methamphetamine in magnetic cases under the vehicle. The defendant further consented to a search of a location in Baldwin County where he was living, and officers recovered another approximate 600 grams of methamphetamine at that location.

Dempsey’s lengthy sentence was driven in part by the fact that he had three previous felony drug distribution convictions out of the State of Georgia.

The case was investigated by the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office and the Drug Enforcement Administration. It was prosecuted in the U.S. Attorney’s Office by Assistant United States Attorney George F. May.
