Brock resigns as Silverhill Police Chief

SILVERHILL, Alabama — For the second time in just over two years, the town of Silverhill will find itself without a top cop after the resignation of Police Chief Kevin Brock on Thursday.

According to a notice posted at Town Hall, the Silverhill Town Council called a special meeting on Thursday to discuss “professionalism” but a second notice was posted beside the first notice saying that the meeting had been canceled.

Mayor Tim Wilson confirmed Thursday that Brock had turned in his resignation earlier that day, but would not comment further out of respect for Brock’s privacy.

“Because he has resigned,” Wilson said, “that’s all I’m going to say.”

Brock’s resignation comes just over two years after the council voted to terminate Chief Kim Wasdin during a special meeting held Jan. 14, 2016.

The town went without a police chief, contracting with the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Department from January until the hiring of Brock in June of 2016.

Brock, a resident of Silverhill and a 1984 graduate of Robertsdale High School, served with the Foley and Loxley police departments and taught criminal justice part-time and as a temporary full-time adjunct professor at Faulkner State University before taking the position in Silverhill.

Wilson said Brock’s letter of resignation will be presented to the council at its next meeting Feb. 5. Work session begins at 5:30 followed by a regular meeting at 6 p.m. It is also likely that the mayor and council will discuss how they will precede going forward with law enforcement in the town.

In the meantime Sgt. Michael Taylor, Silverhill’s chief investigator and canine handler, will take over administrative duties for the department, Wilson said.

Unlike in 2016, when the town had just one full-time officer, Silverhill’s Police Department had a full staff prior to Brock’s departure.
