Collegiate Christmas cheer comes to aid coastal critters

NAIA women’s soccer teams donate to Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo

GULF SHORES AND ORANGE BEACH – The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) is more than just an athletic organization – it’s a group committed to character-driven programs. Sixteen teams competed for the NAIA Women’s Soccer National Championship title in early December 2017, and each team contributed to the local community by donating items to the Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo.

“The opportunity for NAIA student-athletes to have an impact on the local community is one of the most important aspects of NAIA National Championships,” said Marc Burchard, NAIA Championship Event Administrator. “The ability to not only showcase their abilities on the field, but also their ability to assist the local community provides NAIA student-athletes memories that they will be able to look back on after their collegiate careers. The cities of Orange Beach and Gulf Shores provide NAIA student-athletes with such a great championship experience, and this is another great example the athletes can give back to the community.”

Teams donated dozens of items such as baby blankets, dish soap and snacks to the zoo animals to fulfill their Champions of Character promise to demonstrate the core values of integrity, respect, responsibility, sportsmanship and servant leadership.
