ROBERTSDALE, Alabama — The Baldwin County Council on Aging, a department of the Baldwin County Commission, celebrated Older Americans Day on Thursday, May 24 with a gathering at the Baldwin County Coliseum in Robertsdale.

The event, part of Older Americans Month in May, draws residents from senior centers and S.A.I.L. groups from Orange Beach to Little River, said Kelly Childress, coordinator with the Council on Aging. The theme for this year’s Older Americans Month is “Engage At Every Age.”

Several vendors volunteered their time to provide games and prizes to the residents. The Council on Aging also recognized volunteers for their service to the senior citizens of Baldwin County.

Each center manager is asked to nominate one volunteer at their center who went above and beyond to service others. Neal Toivonen with the Summerdale S.A.I.L. Center was selected as Volunteer of the Year and was recognized during Thursday’s program. Door prizes were then handed out and lunch was provided.

The Baldwin Council on Aging is the leading advocate, relative to all aging issues, on behalf of all older persons in the planning and service area. The Council on Aging serves as the resource for information, training, technical assistance, advocacy and leadership for the elderly. The Council on Aging is dedicated to preserving the dignity, independence and peace of mind for the elderly citizens of Baldwin County.
