Pirates win on 32-yard Rayborn field goal in overtime

FAIRHOPE, Ala. -- It was another thriller matchup between the Daphne Trojans and the Fairhope Pirates as both defenses made it hard to account for positive momentum on offense. Special teams played a role for the outcome of the game as the Pirates took the victory at home in overtime with a 20-17 score.

Defensively, both teams made it difficult for the opposing offense to continue a drive. It wasn’t until the Pirates’ first full drive in the second quarter when either team put points on the board with a 27-yard field goal from Pirates kicker Sam Rayborn.

In the third quarter, the Pirates got their first touchdown of the game on a 5-yard run from running back Damell Bell. The next drive, the Pirates quickly added another touchdown run to make the score 17-0.

The Trojans overcame this deficit with a two-quarterback system to cause disarray in the Pirates defense. The Trojans’ first score came from an 8-yard touchdown pass from Trey Battle to Alabama Crimson Tide commit Christian Williams. In the fourth quarter, Battle ran in another touchdown from six yards to make the score 17-14.

Daphne kicker Diego Guajardo then tied the game up with a 51-yard field goal on the last drive of the quarter. The Trojans missed three field goals in the game.

In overtime, Guajardo missed a 26-yard attempt just wide which gave the Pirates a chance to score for the win. Rayborn then kicked a 32-yard field goal to win it for the Pirates. Fairhope quarterback Riley Leonard started due to the injured Devin Mitchell. Leonard passed for 10 completions out of 19 attempts for 130 yards and an interception.

This Friday (Oct. 5) Daphne (2-3) will host the Baldwin County High Tigers (2-3) and Fairhope (3-2) will host the Baker Hornets (2-3).
