Does your family history stretch into the beginning of Baldwin County history? You have until Aug. 1 to be named one of the county’s Heritage Families.

The Baldwin County Commission through its Department of Archives and History announces a ceremony to recognize the early settlers of Baldwin County, Alabama. Citizens who are descendants of ancestors who lived in Baldwin County before 1920 are eligible to be designated as a Baldwin County Heritage Family member.

Applicants must complete an application. A paper copy of the application should be delivered to 312 Courthouse Square, Suite 26, Bay Minette, Alabama 36507, you may email applications to: archivalrecords@baldwincountyal.gov or fax to (251) 580-2528.

A descendant qualifies for inclusion on the listing if they can show that they have an ancestor who lived in Baldwin County before 1920. Proof of record may include birth certificates, census records, deeds, family documents or any other valid record. Proof of ancestry is required as part of the application process. Each applicant must complete an application and can submit the application under only ONE ancestor. There is a place on the application for listing additional Baldwin County ancestors.

Last December more than 400 descendants were honored as “Heritage Families” during opening ceremonies for the Making Alabama Bicentennial Traveling Exhibit on Thursday, Dec. 6 at the Baldwin County Coliseum.

Heritage Family recognition is officially endorsed as an AL200 project. Alabama is celebrating 200 years as a state for three years: 2017, 2018 and 2019. 2018 was designated as the year to “Celebrate Our People.” A booklet titled “Baldwin County, Alabama Heritage Families” will be published and available to the public on or before December 14, 2019.

For more information, contact the Baldwin County Department of Archives and History at (251) 580-2572.
