Help for Hurricane Sally damaged homes

Posted

It has been over six months since Hurricane Sally left her mark on the Gulf Coast region and while much of the debris has been carted away there are still homeowners struggling with needed repairs.  Help is still available through the Hurricane Sally Long Term Recovery program.

The Hurricane Sally Long Term Recovery is a collaborative effort by the Baldwin County Volunteer Organizations Active in Disasters or VOAD and United Way of Baldwin County to help homeowners with repairs to their primary dwelling.

“If FEMA didn’t give enough money for repairs, or a homeowner is struggling with their insurance company or insurance and FEMA came in and they still don’t have enough money to repair their home or the resources to do it on their own, there is community assistance out there,” said Dana Jepsen, Chair of the Baldwin County VOAD and South Baldwin Director at Ecumenical ministries.

In past disasters, droves of volunteers from out of town would come to the area to help but that did not happen this time according to Jepsen and COVID-19 is the likely reason. Without the volunteer labor the group is having to employee contractors to make the repairs and the contractors have been very busy.

“It’s moving a little slower than normal, but help is out there. We know there are still people out there in need and we are ready to help,” Jepsen said.

Homeowners can apply for assistance by calling (251) 223-1094 or online at www.unitedway-bc.org/hurricane-sally-long-term-recovery.
