Brian Campbell steps down as RHS’ head football coach

ROBERTSDALE, Ala. — Robertsdale High Principal Joe Roh has confirmed the resignation of Golden Bears’ head football coach Brian Campbell to Gulf Coast Media Sports. Roh said he received Campbell’s resignation and forwarded it to the superintendent Wednesday.

“(Coach Campbell) has spoken with the players. I want to thank coach Campbell for his services. I can’t say enough good things about him. We will have an exciting, yet daunting task, in replacing him,” Roh said.

The Golden Bears struggled to finish 0-10 last season, Campbell’s sixth as head coach. Earlier he had success as Daphne’s offensive coordinator for seven years before taking over at RHS.

Robertsdale plays in what many consider the toughest league in the state in Class 6A, Region 1 with traditional powers Blount, Daphne, Saraland, Spanish Fort and beginning this fall — the defending Class 5A champion, St. Paul’s Episcopal which must play up under new AHSAA rules to join 6A Region 1 competition as well as continually improving county rivals Baldwin County High and Gulf Shores.

RHS hasn’t had a winning football season since finishing in the playoffs at 10-3 in 2001. They also made the playoffs in 2004 but have not returned since.

Roh said he is already accepting applications and is looking forward to learning what ideas the candidates can bring toward turning the program around.

“I think there are a lot of different elements involved in why we haven’t had the success we’ve liked,” he said. “That will be some of what we are looking for in a new coach. We’re excited about the opportunity we have at this point.”
