A bill sponsored by Rep. Matt Simpson (R – Daphne) that would subject work release inmates to electronic monitoring passed the House on March 10, with a 99-0 bipartisan vote.

“I’m glad to see support for this legislation coming from both sides of the aisle,” Simpson said. “I think this again highlights that this bill is a simple, common sense solution and something we should already be doing to help keep the people of Alabama safe.”

The bill, HB 151, would require violent offenders placed in the work release program to be subject to electronic monitoring as a part of their participation in the program.

“With the monitoring set up by this bill, authorities would be able to track and find these escaped inmates immediately, which helps provide all of our communities security and peace of mind,” Simpson said.

The bill was co-sponsored by Rep. Shane Stringer (R – Citronelle) and Rep. Proncey Robertson (R – Mount Hope). Simpson said he was thankful for the support of his House colleagues in getting the legislation through the chamber.
