Yellow Jacket attack trips up Toros in season opener at The Lip

MOBILE, Ala. -- High School Football is back with some of the best non-divisional matchups of the year throughout the state of Alabama. Last year’s exciting matchup between the McGill-Toolen Catholic Yellowjackets at Spanish Fort, which the Yellowjackets won 27-20, was enough to make this year’s matchup the game of the week. Unfortunately for the Toros, as good as the they were in the offseason programs, the Yellowjackets overwhelmed Spanish Fort from start to finish Friday at Lipscomb Field. McGill-Toolen made a huge statement 48-13 at home.
The Toros started off on an equal pacing with the Yellowjackets with a 7-7 score at the end of the first quarter. This was shortly after a 45-yard screen pass from new starting quarterback Jackson Burkhalter to Kris Abrams-Draine, an LSU Tigers commit. The offense of the Yellowjackets was simple but stout as they had two long drives that gave them a 20-7 lead going into halftime. Spanish Fort had a good drive working until a turnover-on-downs ended their first half.
At the beginning of the third quarter, Burkhalter displayed dual-threat running for an 8-yard touchdown to make the score 20-13.
The Toros could not find success afterward. Yellowjackets quarterback Sheldon Layman threw a 62-yard touchdown. In the Toros’ next drive, Burkhalter was hit from his blindside and his pass was intercepted by Christopher Hites. Layman then connected a 51-yard screen touchdown pass to Kendal.
In the fourth quarter, Yellowjacket C.J. Evans exploded on an 86-yard touchdown run and Mc-T’s Reddic Barnes finished the game with a 54-yard touchdown to make the score 48-13.
Burkhalter finished the game with 17 completions (out of 31 attempts) for 169 yards, one touchdown, one interception and 48 rushing yards on nine carries. The offense turned the ball over four times (including a turnover on downs) and gave up sevven tackles for loss.
Coach Blackmon said he is sure the Toros defense will perform better in key matchups and read plays more quickly.
The Yellow Jackets (1-0) will have another home matchup this g Friday against the Murphy Panthers (0-1). The Toros (0-1) will host their first home game of the season against the Daphne Trojans (1-0), who is coming off a 16-13 win against Theodore.
