Quilting group expands donation for hurricane victims

ROBERTSDALE, Alabama — With nearly 50 quilts donated to hurricane victims in Texas, the Stitch-N-Friends sewing group is hoping to make and donate another 80 quilts by the end of this month.

“We have a group that donates Teddy Bears to disaster victims and they have 80 bears ready to stuff and donate,” said Stitch-N-Friends President Tina Morgan, “and if we can put together 80 quilts to go with those Teddy Bears, that’s our goal.”

A group of about 30 quilters gathered Tuesday, Sept. 12 at the PZK Hall in Robertsdale to cut material for quilts. In addition, about a dozen quilts were donated to the group at Tuesday’s meeting, Morgan said.

Following Hurricane Harvey in Texas, the group gathered and sent 48 quilts, which went with a group from the First Baptist Church in Robertsdale to Cypress, Texas on Thursday, Aug. 31.

Morgan said she is hoping to donate the quilts to disaster relief organizations like the American Red Cross or any other that might be providing relief to both Texas and victims of Hurricane Irma which recently hit Florida.

“We want them to go anywhere where they can do good for people,” Morgan said.

Every year, the group supplies quilts to veterans and active service members through the national Quilts of Valor program. The quilts provide not only an essential need of warmth, but also comfort through a traumatic experience.

The group is primarily making baby and twin-sized quilts, but donations of any size quilt will be accepted, Morgan said. Donations of fabric and batting, preferably 100 percent cotton, along with thread and other needed items, are also being accepted.

Anyone wishing to donate quilting items can contact Morgan at 251-654-2286.
