SPANISH FORT. Ala. — Week three of the 2017 High School Football season was a busy night in Spanish Fort as the Toros hosted rival Gulf Shores Dolphins for homecoming and for their fifth California Dreaming Bowl. It was also a reunion for former Toros' assistant and now Gulf Shores head coach Matt Blake with Toros head coach Ben Blackmon. Spanish Fort has won the young county rivalry now 11 of 12 times since 2006. Gulf Shores came out with intensity and effort, but the Toros’ talent led their a 49-3 win.

SF quarterback Jack Samsel threw 11 completions (out of 19 attempts) for 219 yards, two touchdowns, one interception and also rushed for one. Kris Draine had for five receptions for 153 yards and two touchdowns including one for 84 yards. Conner Hagen rushed for 102 yards and two touchdowns on nine carries.

Toros linebacker Destin Myers had two sacks and a tackle for loss and Montaj Cooks had three solo tackles and many assists. Gulf Shores quarterback Rett Files had 12 completions (out of 36 attempts) for 148 yards and two interceptions.

Dolphins Cornerback Caden Goodrich picked off Samsel in the end zone to prevent another SF score. Jacob Knight was the receptions leader for Gulf Shores with four for 62 yards.

A Mason Young field goal for 24-yards averted the shutout for the Dolphins.

There were no hard feelings between the two coaches as they embraced before and after the game, coach Blackmon said.

“I love him to death like my brother. He’s doing a great job at Gulf Shores, I think they finally got the right guy.”

At halftime, Kate Sharp was named 2017 Spanish Fort Homecoming Queen.

The Toros (2-1) travel to face the Robertsdale Golden Bears (0-3) while the Dolphins (0-3) will be looking for their first win in the Matt Blake era at B.C. Rain (0-2).
