OZARK, Ala. — Coastal Alabama, Bay Minette’s Sun Chiefs coached by Wayne Larker battled to tie Wallace-Dothan in the top of the fifth inning and again in the eighth, but fell short to the Governors 3-2 in the 2017 ACCC Championship at Eagle Stadium.

Sun Chiefs Justin Dunnam, Chase Lambert and Tyler Lawrence were named to the 2017 Alabama Community College Conference all-tournament baseball team. The Govs’ starter Jacinto Arredondo was named tournament most valuable player and Wallace coach Mackey Sasser was named Coach of the Year. Other Wallace players Nick Lewis, Joey Bend, and Eric Rodriguez was also named to the All-tournament team which was rounded out by John Michael Matthews and J.D. Kubiszyn of Shelton State, and Colby Robinson and Braxton Light of Wallace-Hanceville.

Reliever Ethan Michaelis got the title-game win for the Govs who will play at 9 a.m. tomorrow (May 27) against Cowley of Kansas in the national tournament — the first trip for the Goves who are also celebrating the school’s 50th birthday.

The ACCC also announced the 2017 All-Region, All-Division, and Gold Glove Teams.

The Sun Chief’s Dayton Cook of Spanish Fort along with teammate Lambert were named All-Division (SOUTH) for their contributions to the Chiefs’ season. Marcus Buckley of Bishop State was also an All-South selection.

Cook was also selected for All-Region honors. And Coastal teammate Luke Wall of Oneonta received the ACCCA Gold Glove award.

The Chiefs finished as the state runner up in a tough league with a 30-27 overall and a 20-12 conference-division record. For more visit: ACCCAthletics.com.
