Green wins her third career AHSAA championship, 12-under mark sets new state record

OPELIKA, Ala. – Fairhope High senior Virginia Green shot a 6-under 66 for the second-straight day to finish the 2017 tournament with a record 12-under par, 132 total — a new AHSAA all-time record in the Girls’ State Golf Championships.

Green shattered the previous girls’ 36-hole state-tournament record of 137 by five strokes Tuesday at the Robert Trent Jones Auburn National Course in Opelika. Green led all scorers for her third individual state medal with the unprecedented 132 total.

Michaela Morard and Gabi Oubre shared the previous record. Oubre set it first in 2010 playing for Cottage Hill Christian. Morard tied the mark as a seventh grader playing for Huntsville.


Winning the girls’ team state 7A championships were Spain Park, Fairhope shot a 475 as a team to take fourth. Rounding out the Pirates’ roster with Green were Kate Dean, Hannah Dees and Mary Harris.

Muscle Shoals won Class 6A, Trinity Presbyterian (4A/5A) and Providence Christian (1A/2A).
 In the boys’ divisions Mountain Brook (7A), Muscle Shoals (6A), St. Paul’s Episcopal (5A), UMS-Wright (4A), Providence Christian (3A) and Westbrook Chrisitan (1A/2A) won championships Tuesday. Team totals are based on the top three scores for each team.

CLASS 7A BOYS: The Spartans shot a two-day total 573 to finish 3-under for the tournament and won the 7A state crown by eight strokes over runner-up Vestavia Hills (581). Ford Clegg won the low medalist honors with a 68 Tuesday to finish 2-under at 142. Auburn’s Connor Newton, John Racciatti of McGill-Toolen and Vestavia Hills’ Ryan Eshlerman tied for second at 143. Austin Coggin of Vestavia shot the best round in 7A Tuesday, a 67, to finish at 144.


CLASS 6A BOYS: Muscle Shoals won the state 6A championship with a 582 team total and defending champion Homewood was second at 590. Thomas Regan of Muscle Shoals and Luke Shaw of Northridge tied for low medalist at 2-under 142. Homewood’s Jack Poole had the low round Tuesday (70) and finished four strokes back at 146.


CLASS 5A BOYS: St. Paul’s Episcopal shot 603 to beat runner-up Guntersville (644) by 41 strokes as Will McFadden shot a 70 Tuesday to finish as low medalist at 146. Douglas’ Anthony Lumpkin was second at 148 with a final round 71. McFadden’s 70 was the low round in 5A for the day.


CLASS 4A BOYS: UMS-Wright, coached by Adam Boehm, shot 298 Tuesday to finish at 582 to win the state championship. Oneonta was second at 605. J.P. Cave edged out teammate Andrew Graves by three strokes to win low medalist honors for the Bulldogs. Cave shot 70-69 for 5-under 139. Graves, who had a first-day leading 66, shot 76 Tuesday to finish 2-under 142. Oneonta’s Stewart Miller was third at 143.


CLASS 3A BOYS: Providence Christian finished at 590 to win the 3A title in its first year in the division. West Morgan was second at 619. Thomas Ponder led PCA with a two-day total 138 to finish 6-under for the tourney to capture low medalist. West Morgan’s Dakota Terry had the low round Tuesday (68) to finish two strokes off the pace at 140 to take runner-up.


CLASS 1A/2A BOYS: Westbrook Christian shot 598 to win the championship and Donoho was second at 650. John Hilliard Cantanzaro was low medalist for the Warriors with the low round of the tournament for boys – 9-under 63 to finish at 9-under 135. He shot even-par 72 Monday. William Wethington of Westbrook almost kept pace with his teammate Tuesday carding a 4-under 68 and finished second at 143.
CLASS

7A GIRLS: Spain Park won the team title with a 13-over 445. Hoover was six strokes back at 451 for second place.


CLASS 6A GIRLS: Muscle Shoals and Northridge tied with identical 503 scores but the Trojans won the tie breaker for first place – the team’s fourth-place scorer Riva Ray shot 187 to edge Northridge’s No. 4 total. Park Crossing’s Brooke Sansom earned medalist honors at 5-under 139. 


CLASS 4A/5A GIRLS: Trinity Presbyterian scored s 494 to take the state title. UMS-Wright was second at 511. Sophie Burks was low medalist for Trinity with her second straight 71 to finish 2-under 142. CLASS 1A/3A GIRLS: Providence Christian shot 489 to capture the 1A/3A championship. Stephenie Fowler of American Christian was low medalist at 149. She shot 71 Tuesday. Allison Howard was second for PCA with 152.
