ATMORE, Alabama — A Bay Minette man has been detained after a corrections officer was stabbed at the William C. Holman Correctional Facility in Atmore on Thursday.
According to a report from the Alabama Department of Corrections, prison officials reported that an inmate assaulted and stabbed a corrections officer at around 12:35 p.m. in the facility’s dining hall during the noon meal.
According to the report, the officer was stabbed in retaliation for being denied an extra trey of food. Correctional officers responded to the incident and were able to constrain the inmate and give aid to the injured officer.
The officer was airlifted to an off-site hospital. The officer’s condition is reported as critical.
Cleveland Cunningham was detained as a suspect in the stabbing. Cunningham is serving a 20-year sentence on a 2013 first-degree robbery conviction in Baldwin County. The inmate was segregated from general population without further incident.

According to the Baldwin County Corrections Facility website, Cleve Cunningham III, 20, of Bay Minette, was arrested on first degree robbery and assault charges with the Bay Minette and Loxley police departments in January of 2012.
According to the Alabama Department of Corrections Facility website, Cunningham was convicted in March of 2013 on three counts of first degree robbery, one count of first degree assault and one count of second degree assault. He was released (presumably transferred) from the Baldwin County Jail facility in April of 2013.
No other inmates were involved in the stabbing.
The facility was placed on lockdown while ADOC officials investigate the incident.
ADOC is not releasing the name of the officer pending the ongoing investigation.
