GULF SHORES AND ORANGE BEACH, Ala. — Ready to run? The Gulf Shores and Orange Beach Sports Commission’s Run the Beach half-marathon series begins with the Big Beach Marathon and Half-Marathon on Jan. 29, featuring a training class with 1972 U.S. Olympian Jeff Galloway.

The Jeff Galloway Running School will take place Saturday, Jan. 28 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at The Hangout in Gulf Shores for $99 per person.

"We are happy to kick off the Run the Beach Series with the Big Beach Marathon and Half-Marathon," said Mike Clark of Junction 311 Endurance Sports, the company that owns and manages the race. "The Jeff Galloway Running School helps us take these races and the Run the Beach series to the next level and raises the profile of Gulf Shores and Orange Beach as a premier running destination."

The idea behind the Run the Beach series echoes this sentiment in giving people an incentive to get fit and visit Alabama’s beaches during the shoulder seasons.

“Run the Beach was designed to engage runners by inviting them to experience our beach cities at different times during the year,” said Beth Gendler, vice president of sales for the Sports Commission. “Participating in Jeff’s class is a great way for avid and novice runners alike to start the year off right with fitness ahead of the Big Beach races.”

This new three-race series includes Big Beach followed by the Sea Turtle Half-Marathon (Feb. 18) and the Kaiser by Wyndham Vacation Rentals Coastal Half Marathon (Nov. 25).
