Senior Expo promises fun while promoting healthy lifestyle

ROBERTSDALE, Alabama — Come join the South Alabama Regional Planning Commission’s Area on Aging fun and food while promoting a healthy lifestyle at the 2016 Baldwin County Senior Lifestyle Expo.

The event will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 6 at the Baldwin County Coliseum, 19477 Fairground Road in Robertsdale.

“This is a fun event where seniors can get together, walk around, enjoy games and learn about what is available to them,” said Area Agency on Aging Director Julie McGee.

The event has been held in Mobile for well over a decade and was started in Baldwin County in June of 2012 as a way to better serve its residents, McGee said. The following year the event was moved to the fall and last year, the Expo celebrated the 50th anniversary of the passage of the Older Americans Act and the establishment of Medicare and Medicaid.

“One of the main reasons we do the Expo is to let seniors know what’s available to them with Medicare and Medicaid,” McGee said. “This is the only time of year that they can make changes to their healthcare plan and we want to make sure they are informed to get the best possible covereage for them.”

Information is also provided regarding programs available through the Area Agency on Aging, McGee said.

There will also be several local providers with booths set up to provide healthcare screenings and advice for seniors, McGee said. There will also be free vision screenings and flu shots will be available for a small fee.

Several vendors will also be on hand with plenty of free handouts, along with plenty of games and prizes available.

Participants will also receive a free token for a spin on the Wheel of Fortune and chances will be available for door prizes with the main prize a weekend getaway at the Beau Rivage in Biloxi.

The event includes free health screenings from several local providers, entertainment and a free tote bag will be provided for shopping with games and prizes, a market area with local vendors, giveaways and door prizes.

Flu shots are available. Admission and parking are free and lunch will be provided. Personalities from WKRG Channel 5 will also be on hand and a free healthy lunch will be served.
