ROBERTSDALE, Alabama — In his fifth year as the Naval science instructor at Robertsdale High School, Petty Officer 1st Class Edward “Theo” Theodoro, U.S. Navy (retired) has been named Teacher of the Year for School Year 2016-17.

This is the first time in the 24-year history of Robertsdale Navy JROTC that a Naval Science Instructor has received this honor.

Theodoro, a 45-year-old Robertsdale resident, served 20 years aboard America’s most advanced aircraft carriers as an aircraft handler and recruiter. Retiring with a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice and a master’s degree in emergency management, Theodoro received his teaching certification in 2012.

Accomplishments at Robertsdale include:

-- Seventh out of 583 Navy schools in 2016 Joint Leadership and Academic Bowl.

-- Doubled cadet enrollment to 150 per semester, 300 per year.

-- First paperless JROTC program in Baldwin County.

-- Created virtual classroom for collaborative access to homebound cadets.

“Petty Officer Theodoro is a unique teacher that is able to be both a rule enforcing instructor and a nurturing father figure that earns the students’ trust and admiration,” said RHS Principal Joe Roh.

Senior Naval Science Instructor, Retired Marine Corps Lt. Col. Scott A. Meehan, had this to say about Theodoro: “Anyone that has spent more than two minutes around him knows Petty Officer Theodoro’s love for the kids. He is a consummate professional and an inspiration to our Cadets. His dedication to this program goes beyond measure and I am extremely proud of him. I am also profoundly excited to see what he will accomplish in the coming years.”

Theodoro will next compete in the countywide selection process for potential nomination as candidate for the honor Alabama Teacher of the Year, School Year 2017-18.
