Andy Newton speaks to Foley business leaders

FOLEY - Andy Newton, President and CEO of Uniti Fiber, previously Southern Light, was the guest speaker at the Nov. 1 Leadership Luncheon, hosted by the South Baldwin Chamber of Commerce. As stated on the Uniti Fiber website: “Uniti Fiber is a unified force in network services providing customers with the necessary infrastructure to get business done in an efficient and cost-effective way.” By using fiber instead of copper, the company is creating innovative technology to increase connectivity for the many schools, governmental operations, businesses, and residential homes that they service. With the oncoming 5G within the next 4-5 years, Newton stated the company is already placing antennas that will be needed to support the new generation.

Outside of technological advances, Newton talked about the company’s culture, which is one of the things he feels that has set them apart over the years.

“We spend a lot of time creating a company where we treat each other like family,” said Newton. “Where we pick each other up when we fall, and where we celebrate successes. We try to give back to our community in a meaningful way, not just with money, but with our service.”

The company has been recognized for its successes nationally, and was ranked in Fortune Magazine 2015 as the 51st best place to work for women in the country, based on a survey of all company employees and an analysis of benefits, including maternity and paternity leave, both which are offered by the company. In 2016, the company was ranked the 52nd best medium size work place in the country to work for, both things Newton states the company is proud of.

The employees believe in supplying meaningful donations through their time and money to the community, and in 2016 they were named Habitat for Humanity Partner of the Year, after employees worked building houses alongside Habitat for Humanity. Many are enrolled in the Big Brother, Big Sister program, and the entire company has adopted a school close to their building.

“If you want to change your community, you can’t just throw money at it,” Newton said. “You’ve got to get dirty, get out and work, and that means going to Habitat for Humanity and sweating, it means going to the school and spending some productive time teaching and helping your little brother.”
