Baldwin County Schools officials broke ground on two new projects on the Eastern Shore last week, including a long-awaited new K-6 elementary school for the Belforest area.
The Belforest School will be a 123,000 square-foot facility that will have 54 classrooms and be able to hold a capacity of 1,200 students.
The system also broke ground on a $5.7 million addition to Fairhope Intermediate School, which will include 16 new classrooms and a new gymnasium.
“Our board has shown what’s important to them, and that’s handling growth and building state-of-the-art schools,” Superintendent Eddie Tyler said. “We’re very excited about it.”
Both projects are part of the system’s Pay-As-You-Go construction program that was funded through the Baldwin County Commission’s renewal of the penny sales tax.
BCBE member Shannon Cauley said she was thankful Baldwin County Schools had the ability to be able to move forward with projects like these thanks to the penny tax renewal.
“Without that renewal that was done by the county commission in 2017, we wouldn’t be in the position to be building schools and addressing the growth that is continuing to come to Baldwin County,” Cauley said.
