Bay Minette man charged in kidnapping of elderly mother following 14-hour standoff

BAY MINETTE, Alabama — A Bay Minette man is in jail charged with kidnapping and burglary after allegedly holding his elderly mother hostage for approximately 14 hours on Thursday, Oct. 17 in North Baldwin County.

According to a release issued Friday by the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office, BCSO SWAT units were called in assist at the home of Dorothy Hubbard on Old Hubbard Road in Bay Minette after she and her son, Eugene Hubbard, called 911 and said another son, 53-year-old Jason Hubbard, had broken in the back door and pointed a shotgun at Eugene.

According to the release, Eugene Hubbard was able to get out and meet with deputies. Deputies set up a perimeter around the house and contacted Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office SWAT due to the violent offense and possible hostage situation with their 70 year old mother.

Negotiators spoke to Jason Hubbard, via phone, on and off for approximately 14 hours, according to the release. Hubbard was disoriented and appeared to be under the influence of something.

SWAT utilized an armored rescue vehicle in an attempt to resolve the situation. Dorothy Hubbard eventually was able to escape when Jason Hubbard fell asleep.

Team members deployed chemical agents into the house to force Jason Hubbard out of the house. After several hours and still no compliance, additional measures were used to get him to come out.

Team members finally got a visual on Jason Hubbard lying on the floor. Less lethal and additional chemical agents were used to gain compliance. Jason Hubbard was taken into custody when team members entered the residence. He was incoherent and armed with a revolver.

Jason was checked by medical and then transported to docket where he was checked out by the medical unit there.

According to the release, Hubbard has an extensive criminal history, including 27 previous arrests for various felony assault, robbery, rape and drug and alcohol related charges.

He is charged with kidnapping and second degree burglary (domestic violence) and is currently in jail on a $150,000 bond.

No injuries occurred to Sheriff’s Office personnel. Total time of operation was 16 1/2 hours.
