BAY MINETTE, Alabama — A Bay Minette man is facing torture/willful abuse of a child charges after Bay Minette police found welt marks from head to toe on a 5-year-old boy, the son of his girlfriend.

Adrian Delon Likely, 36, of West Hurricane Road in Bay Minette is facing charges after police responded Wednesday to an apartment at Harbor Crossing Apartments on Dobson Avenue, just south of Interstate 65 in Bay Minette at approximately 7:10 p.m. on Wednesday.

“Officers found that the boy had been switched from his feet up to his head,” said Sgt. Ray Dixon, chief investigator with the Bay Minette Police Department. “On examination it was found that he had large welts coming up all over his body.”

Likely was also charged with possession of marijuana, second degree, after a bag was found on him during a routine search, Dixon said.

“When an arrest is made, the officer pats the suspect down, gives them the speech and asks them if there is anything on them that might be considered prison contraband,” Dixon said. “Likely chose to roll the dice and, after he was taken to jail, police found another bag of marijuana in his sock.”

Because of that, Dixon said, Likely was also charged with promoting prison contraband, second degree, another felony charge.

DHR was contacted in the case, Dixon said, and interviewed the child’s mother and uncle, informing them that they needed to have the child checked out at North Baldwin Infirmary.

“We have not yet followed up to see if that has actually occurred,” said Dixon in an interview Friday morning.

The torture/willful abuse of a child charge carries a $10,000 bond, with an addition $1,000 for the possession charge and an addition $5,000 for the contraband charge. Records show that Likely was released on bond Thursday morning.
