Blakeley to host teacher workshop on American Revolution

Posted

BLAKELEY -- Historic Blakeley State Park will conduct a free workshop for teachers on exploring American history on June 6 from 9 a.m. to noon.

The workshop, conducted in partnership with the David Matthews Center for Civic Life and the Auburn University College of Liberal Arts, will introduce social studies teachers to the practice of deliberation in the classroom as a way to understand historical events. Teachers registering through the University of South Alabama’s Research and Inservice Center will receive professional development credit.

During the workshop teachers will deliberate the choices facing residents of colonial America regarding the fractured relationship with Great Britain in 1776 and learn how and why to moderate similar experiences for students in the classroom.

As a part of the workshop participants will discover the context and outcome of Revolutionary War battles that took place near Mobile and the future Baldwin County vicinity and strategize on ways in which local historical content can deepen student learning of American history.
