Bayside's Lazenby sailing into AHSAA Sports Hall of Fame

DAPHNE, Ala., – Bayside Academy football coach Phil Lazenby has been selected for induction into the AHSAA’s Alabama High School Sports Hall of Fame. The 11-member Class of 2019 will be inducted at the 27th annual banquet at the Renaissance Montgomery Hotel and Spa on March 18, 2019.

Coach Lazenby is a 1974 graduate of Samford University, where he played on their 1971 National Championship football team was selected Most Valuable Defensive Player in 1973. He earned his master’s degree in education from the University of Montevallo in 1979. Additionally, he reached the rank of first sergeant while serving in the U.S. Army infantry with tours in Europe and Central America.

Coach Lazenby’s long and storied coaching career began in 1976 at Jess Lanier High School in Bessemer where he served as an assistant football and head tennis coach. He then moved to Mountain Brook High School where he was assistant principal and defensive coordinator for the football team. His first stint as a head football coach came at Guntersville High School before coaching at Southside High School in Gadsden and Benjamin Russell High School in Alexander City. Prior to coming to Bayside in 2007, Coach Lazenby served as an assistant coach and the strength and conditioning coach at UMS-Wright Preparatory School in Mobile.


Coach Lazenby’s overall head coaching record is 169–89 with two state championship appearances at Benjamin Russell and one at Bayside. His teams have had just two losing seasons in 21 years and have reached the state playoffs 17 times.

Coach Lazenby has coached in the Alabama-Mississippi All Star Game; was the ASWA Coach of the Year in 1997, 2011, and 2015; and is a past president of the Alabama Football Coaches Association. He was inducted into the Samford Athletic Hall of Fame this year.
