ROBERTSDALE, Alabama — The Robertsdale City Council took a pair of actions a specially called meeting on Monday, Jan. 11 in order to replace a bus utilized by the city-run George P. Thames Adult Activity Center.

While the center has been closed for public use sine March of 2020 due to COVID-19 restrictions, staff and volunteers continue to serve older adults in the Robertsdale-area providing meals and transportation services to residents.

Under its “Transit Vehicle Disposition Replacement Policy” the Alabama Department of Transportation provides for the replacement of transit vehicles that have “exceeded the useful life threshold for age.”

Under the terms of the agreement, the city is required to approve an agreement with ALDOT and pass a resolution authorizing the agreement by Jan. 15.

Agencies approved for replacement vehicles are required by ALDOT to facilitate the disposal of older vehicles within 45 days of receiving the new vehicle.

The city currently utilizes two buses and one van that have been attained through federal grants, and a truck, which was provided by city funds.

Plans are to replace the older of the city’s two buses used by the Adult Activity Center, a 2005 model.

The city plans to acquire a modified bus with a wheelchair lift and two securement stations while retaining an older bus that has a wheelchair lift and one securement station.
