FOLEY – Daniel McKinney became the CEO of South Baldwin Region Medical Center in March 2018, returning to the center where he originally worked as Assistant Chief Executive Officer from 2012-2015.
Born and raised in Birmingham, McKinney used to vacation in South Baldwin throughout his life, becoming familiar, as well as fond, of the area. He went to undergrad and grad school at the University of Alabama, where he was introduced to administration.
“My father is a physician, so I was surrounded by healthcare for my entire life,” McKinney said. “I had a mentor who worked in the administrative side for the Department of Surgery at UAB, and he gave me my first taste of healthcare administration. I interned there for three summers in a row, and I really enjoyed it.”
After grad school, McKinney started work with Community Health Systems, South Baldwin Regional’s parent company. Originally working out of Gadsden Regional for two and a half years, he then moved to South Baldwin Regional for three years, and finally out of state to Spartanburg, South Carolina for three years.
“When the opportunity came up here, I took it,” McKinney said. “I love Spartanburg, but this is home. I can remember when I was in grad school I would drive past South Baldwin Regional and think that I could live where I vacationed, and here we are.”
It was being able to utilize his skillset that led McKinney to hospital administration, as well as his desire to make a difference with his work.
“I think my skillset is relationship building, looking at complex situations and figuring out how to maneuver to get to the place that you want to be, mathematics, and building teams,” McKinney said. “And this is something I can feel good about, it’s a business where we’re making a difference in our community by providing healthcare to the individuals here.”
McKinney is looking towards the future and the success of the hospital, which he states will be based on the quality of care that is delivered from the hospital staff, the treatment of the staff, and adding to the medical staff to accommodate the growth being experienced in the area.
“We want to continue to deliver excellent quality care for our community and the people that visit our community, that’s our foundation,” said McKinney. “Secondary to that, we want to continue to treat each other well. We’ve been in the top 100 best places to work for the last seven years, and we want to continue to strive for that. And then we plan to continue to expand services through physician recruitment.”
South Baldwin Regional recently opened a new residency practice, which McKinney states is one step towards increasing the number of physicians in the area. He states one of the biggest challenges the hospital faces is a good challenge, which is the growth to the community. To match that, he plans to add to the hospital workforce to continue the quality of care offered.
“Our goal here is to continue to grow a health system that the community can be proud of and that the community can trust. That’s what we’re working hard to do here every single day,” said McKinney.
Outside of work, McKinney is spending time with his wife, three-year-old twins, and six-month-old, and watching college football.
“I love getting home and spending time with them,” McKinney said. “My wife and I started dating in 7th grade, so we know the good, the bad, and the ugly of each other. She’s wonderful, she’s the glue that holds the family together, and we just like hanging out.”
