DAPHNE – The Trojans pulled out an upset win Friday night over visiting Saraland (2-1) to secure the first victory of new head coach Kenny King's tenure in comeback fashion. After being down 14-6 at halftime, the Trojans (1-2) attacked with a stiff dose of the run en route to 11 unanswered points and a 17-14 victory.

"This win means a lot," King said. "You start off 0-2 and you fight for that first win. Saraland is a great team and I'm just excited we were able to pull this one off."

The Trojans took an early lead with a 3-yard rushing touchdown from quarterback Chance Newman. The scoring run was set up after Newman hit Letarius Battiste for a 49-yard gain three plays earlier. Daphne took the lead 6-0 after a missed extra point.

Saraland's defense helped settle the score when Matt Harper recovered a Trojan fumble at the Daphne 34-yard line. Johnathan Perryman punched it in from two yards out shortly thereafter. With the extra point, the Spartans took a 7-6 lead.

A few possessions later, Maddox Copeland recovered a Trojan fumble at the opponent's 40-yard line to set Saraland up with great field position again with just over a minute left in the first half. On fourth and ten, Spartan quarterback Jack West threw a 28-yard touchdown pass to Jakyrus Williams to extend the lead to 14-6 going into halftime.

At the start of the third quarter, the Trojans decided to ride the running game with five straight totes, the last of which was a 23-yard scoring rush from Battiste. Daphne successfully converted the two-point attempt to tie the game at 14-14.

The Trojans would later add a 30-yard field goal in the third quarter to take the 17-14 lead into the final stanza. From there, it was just a matter of stout defense from a defensive-minded football team.

Saraland decided to test the Daphne secondary in the fourth quarter to little avail. West missed on 9 of his last 15 pass attempts, including the game sealing interception in the waning seconds.

Next week the Trojans will look to even out their record with a home contest against Leflore while the Spartans return home in hopes of turning things around in a game against Blount.
