Drinks, good times, and axe throwing: Bier Shack Taproom now open

FOLEY - Looking for something a little different for a fun outing or date night? Something that offers good food, alcohol on tap, and perhaps a little axe throwing? The Bier Shack Taproom is now open in Foley, offering German food, beer and wine on tap, axe throwing, and lots more for any occasion.

Owners Karin Fry and Frank Spinella moved to the area last December and decided to bring the axe throwing pub to Foley, as such locations have grown in popularity over the last few years after becoming a hit in Canada. The lanes offered at The Bier Shack Taproom are perfect for a group of friends or family who are looking to have some fun and see who can hit the most bullseyes in a round. Walls separate the lanes for safety, but plenty of viewing room has been left so you can watch the players in action.

Prices for axe throwing are $15 for half an hour or $25 for an hour per person per axe. Wednesday nights are Ladies’ Night, offering $10 for an hour of play. The staff will help newcomers by showing them how to throw at least once, but then will leave the players to it and let them have fun on their own.

Of course, what’s a night out without food? The Bier Shack has a menu full of German specialties, including Brats, Schnitzels, salads, sandwiches, and lots more. Then there’s the German beers on tap, including Guinness Stout, Hazy IPA, Fairhope Causeway IPA, Festbier, Hop Bullet Double IPA, Cream Ale, Hefeweizen, Hofbrau Original Lager, Dunkel Lager, Hannahatchee Creek IPA, Yuengling, and Bitburger Pilsner. The wine is also on tap to keep it fresh. Speaking of fresh, all the food is made to order and homemade. The bar area is equipped with televisions, making it a great place to relax and enjoy the games.

One of the most unique things about the Bier Shack Taproom is that it’s a family-friendly location, promoting days and evenings out with the family and offering board games for children too young for axe throwing, and pool tables, foosball, darts, and even a shuffleboard.

“People don’t just come here and sit down, they get up and move and play games, be it throwing darts or throwing axes,” said Fry. “We are a nonsmoking establishment with a designated smoking area outside, and we aim to be family-friendly. Since we have decent hours you can bring your children, and we offer highchairs and games for the kids. I wanted to create a playground for everyone, adults and children.”

The Bier Shack Taproom is open Mon.-Thur. 3 p.m. - 10 p.m., and opens Fri.-Sun. at 2 p.m. Fry says these hours allow for people to rent the space during the morning for good rates since the business is closed. She says it can be used for team building, birthday parties, baby showers, fundraisers, etc. You can call the location for additional information on what’s included in renting the space and to discuss prices.

“I wanted this to be a place for locals, because the tourists are going to come,” Fry said. “This gives them a new place to come and hang out and spend time with friends and family.”

The Bier Shack Taproom is located at 8191 Highway 59 in Foley. For more information, give them a call at 251-943-8311 or visit their website at BierShackTaproom.com.
