Elections certified in Bay Minette, Robertsdale, Loxley

 FOLEY, Alabama — There were no changes to the results reported when elections in Bay Minette, Robertsdale and Loxley were certified in special meetings last week in the three municipalities.

In elections held Aug. 25, Bay Minette and Robertsdale both re-elected mayors with incumbents winning in four of the five council races in Robertsdale and Loxley, while challengers won both council seats in Bay Minette.

Municipal elections were not necessary in Silverhill and Summerdale with only incumbents qualifying in all races there.

Final results for the three municipalities include:

Bay Minette

In a special meeting held Tuesday, Sept. 1, the city of Bay Minette certified elections for two new council members, while Robert A. “Bob” Wills will retain his seat as mayor.

Wills received 77.2 percent of the vote with a total of 658 votes, including 24 absentee votes, defeating fellow attorney Harry Still III, who garnered a total of 194 votes, including six absentee.

Challengers Pete Sellers and Matt Franklin won election over incumbents by relatively narrow margins.

In District 1, Sellers received a total of 167 votes (52.4 percent), winning by just 15 votes over Anne Corbett, who was appointed to fill the seat following the death of her husband, Danleigh Corbett last September. Each candidate received two absentee votes.

For the District 3 seat, Franklin defeated incumbent John W. Biggs 148-116 margin (56.1 percent), getting five absentee votes to Biggs’ 10.

There were no provisional ballots counted an any of the three races.

Incumbents Mike Phillips, District 2; William C. Taylor, District 4; and Shannon Clemmons, District 5; all qualified unopposed.

Robertsdale

Only one provisional ballot out of seven was counted in Robertsdale resulting in no changes as results were certified in a special meeting held Tuesday, Sept. 1, according to election coordinator Shannon Burkett.

Mayor Charles Murphy held off two challengers without the need for a runoff, garnering 513 of the 864 votes cast, retaining his seat for a ninth term in office.

Roger Booth received the only provisional vote for mayor, finishing with 229 votes, while Tim Brown received 122 votes.

Challenger Russell Johnson added to his total in Place 4 winning over incumbent Brent Kendrick 451-403. Kendrick served as council member from 1988-1996 before being re-elected in 2000, a total of seven terms, or 28 years on the council.

Mayor Pro Tem Joe Kitchens garnered an additional vote in Place 1, finishing with 580 votes to 268 votes for challenger Jim Giles. Challenger Lonnie Ard received an additional vote in Place 2, finishing with 346 votes to Sue Cooper’s 508 votes.

Incumbents Ruthie Campbell, Place 3; and Paul Hollingsworth, Place 5, both qualified unopposed.

 

Loxley

The Loxley Town Council held a special meeting Monday, Aug. 31 to certify the election of incumbent Chris McCall, who held off three challengers to retain his seat in Place 4 following the Aug. 25 election.

McCall was appointed to fill the council seat vacated by Richard Teal, who was appointed mayor following the death of longtime mayor Billy Middleton last year.

A total of five provisional ballots and four absentee ballots were counted, added to 261 in-person voting ballots.

McCall received a total of 143 votes, including one provisional vote, out of 270 votes cast to garner 53.0 percent of the vote.

Randy Smith finished second with 23.7 percent, a total of 64 votes, including one provisional vote and three absentee votes; followed by Dr. Philip Dembowski with 34 total votes, including two provisional votes and one absentee vote (12.6 percent); and Beth Lovell with 29 votes, including one provisional vote (10.7 percent).

Teal, Mayor Pro Tem Kasey Childress and council members Richard Lee Wilson, Jeffrey T. Knight and Katherine Breeden all qualified unopposed.
