FAIRHOPE, Ala. — The Fairhope Pirates’ fourth Spina Bifida Awareness Game will be tonight at W.C. Majors field in Fairhope. Be sure to wear YELLOW! The Pirates will host Davidson High. Kickoff is 7 p.m.
Fairhope assistant coach Brett Horne and his wife Heather started this tradition four years ago.
“The game itself is big for both of us but it is also our Spina Bifida awareness game,” coach Horne said. “This year we have around 20 different families coming to the game along with doctors, physical therapists, and family members.”
The Hornes also have a personal stake in better awareness of the condition.
“My daughter Katelynn was born with Spina Bifida and has been an inspiration to our family ever since,” he said. “She is seven years old and has a twin named Emmalynn who has grown up side by side with Katelynn.
“Those two are inseparable and best friends. While Emmalynn does not have Spina Bifida she has defiantly helped out along the way.”
There will be a raffle and t-shirts at the game to help raise money for the Spina Bifida Association of Alabama. The association supports many different adults and children that have Spina Bifida by having camps that have many different adapted activities for the kids and adults.
“They also have many different meetings and help families get to these informative meetings.” Horne said. “Overall it is an awesome association to be a part of.”
