Final phase of Spanish Fort debris collection to start

SPANISH FORT – The third and last phase of Hurricane Sally debris pickups in Spanish Fort will begin Wednesday, Oct. 28, city officials said.

Mayor Mike McMillan said most of the fallen trees and limbs knocked down by the Sept. 16 storm have been collected. Crowder-Gulf, the company under contract to collect debris, began removing building debris, on Thursday, Oct. 22.

“They will have a final push starting Wednesday, the 28th of October,” McMillan said. “The third and final push through the city and they should be getting everything. I think they’ve done an excellent job. They’ve had minimal problems. You’re always going to have a few, but I think, all in all, they’ve done a very good job.”

McMillan said anyone who knew of areas where material still needed collection should contact City Hall.

“We’re trying to wrap up all the streets, but it’s certainly easy to miss some,” McMillan said.

Councilman Curt Smith said some residents have not yet been able to move all the debris on their property to the curb for collection and need to realize that the deadline for removal has arrived.

“I think we need to get this word out as best we can for those who, for whatever reason, just haven’t gotten around to moving trees out of their back yard,” Smith said. “They’ve been busy helping neighbors, busy working or doing whatever.”

McMillan said officials do not yet know how much material has been collected or what the final cost will be to the city.
