FOLEY - The City of Foley is entering its 40th year as a recognized Tree City USA. The recognition, awarded by the National Arbor Day Foundation, provides framework to assist communities in expanding and maintaining their public trees.

In an effort to promote the planting of trees in the city, Saturday, Feb. 27 has been declared as Arbor Day in the City of Foley. The event will begin at 1 p.m. at the Coastal Alabama Farmers and Fishermen’s Market, located at 20733 Miflin Road, Foley. Representatives from the Alabama Forestry Commission, Baldwin County Master Gardeners and Certified Arborists will be on hand to answer any questions about trees.

An assortment of over 650 trees in one- or three-gallon containers will be given out for free to those in attendance. The city asks only one container per family. Boy Scout Troop 77 will be onsite to assist in distributing the trees. Prior to the tree distribution, the Foley High School Air Force Junior ROTC will present the Colors, and the winning posters from the Arbor Day Poster Contest will be on display. Live Oak Trees will be dedicated and planted in memory of Bebe Foster, Dr. Marvin “Buddy” Taylor and Terry Underwood.

An annual tradition at Foley is to donate a tree-themed book to each of the local public schools and the public library to commemorate the Arbor Day celebration. Foley Elementary School received “Stay, Little Seed,” Mathis Elementary School and Foley Middle School received “Planting the Wild Garden,” Foley High School received “Sprout Lands: Tending the Endless Gift of Trees,” and Foley Public Library received “Peter and the Tree Children.”
