FOLEY - A plane crash at the Foley Municipal Airport on Monday, May 6 at approximately 1 p.m. left two people critically injured.
Names of the victims have not been released, but the Foley Fire Department has confirmed a student pilot and instructor went down in a single-engine Piper that then rolled down a hill. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) officials stated the victims were practicing takeoffs and landings. The Foley Municipal Airport closed normal operations following the accident for investigation.
One victim was airlifted from the scene to University Hospital in Mobile. The second victim was taken to South Baldwin Regional Medical Center before being airlifted to University Hospital. Both victims are in very critical condition and are suffering from life-threatening injuries, according to Fire Chief Joey Darby.
Airport emergency crews arrived at the scene first, finding one victim out of the plane. They are unsure if the victim was ejected from the plane or if they were able to crawl from the wreckage. Crews extinguished a small fire and removed the second victim from the plane.
No causes have been released as to why the plane crashed, but no distress message was received before the accident, said airport officials. The Federal Aviation Administration is leading the investigation.
