LOXLEY, Alabama — Four inmates at the Loxley Community Based Facility/Community Work Center have tested positive for COVID-19, according to a release issued Tuesday by the Alabama Department of Corrections.

The inmates are among 50 confirmed to have tested positive by the ADOC for COVID-19 as of Aug. 10.

According to the release 41 of the inmates who tested positive on Monday were at two facilities, 22 at the Bullock Correctional Facility in Union Springs and 19 at the Draper Quarantine Intake Facility in Elmore, along with four in Loxley, two at the Elmore Correctional Facility, one at Kilby Correctional Facility in Montgomery and two at the St. Clair Correctional Facility in Springville.

ADOC also confirmed on Tuesday that James Dunner, a 76-year-old inmate who was serving a life sentence for first-degree sodomy out of Mobile County at St. Clair died Monday after testing positive for COVID-19 on Aug. 2.

Newly identified positive cases include inmates who are symptomatic and inmates who are asymptomatic. All existing quarantine protocols held in-place or newly implemented as recommended by the ADOC’s contracted State Medical Director are being maintained at each facility where newly identified positive inmates are currently housed.

So far there have been 288 total cases of COVID-19 confirmed among the state’s inmate population, 98 of which remain active.

These are the first confirmed cases among inmates who tested positive for COVID-19 at the Loxley facility. As of Aug. 11, four staff members from Loxley have self-reported as testing positive since July 30.

One more staff member at an Alabama corrections facility informed ADOC via self-reporting to have tested positive for COVID-19 as of noon Aug. 11, at the Bibb Correctional Facility in Brent.

This individual promptly self-quarantined under the direction of his or her healthcare provider.

The ADOC’s Office of Health Services has initiated an investigation to determine which, if any, ADOC inmates or employees may have had direct, prolonged exposure to this staff member. Upon completing the appropriate due diligence, OHS will advise any staff with direct exposure to contact their healthcare providers and self-quarantine as advised.

According to the release, 133 COVID-19 cases among ADOC staff and contracted staff remain active with 203 staff members who previously self-reported a positive test cleared by medical providers to return to work.
