Rain raids Homecoming to get first win of season over winless Golden Bears

ROBERTDALE, Alabama — Friday the 13th proved unlucky for Robertsdale as the B.C. Rain Red Raiders collected their first win of the season, 32-14 over the winless Golden Bears on Homecoming night at J.D. Sellars Stadium.

Things looked good early for Robertsdale.

After their opening drive stalled on the Red Raider 30 and the RHS defense held B.C. Rain to three-and-out on its first drive, the Bears got on the board first with time running down in the opening period.

A short Raider punt gave Robertsdale good field position at their own 48 and two runs by DeAndre Prim, followed by a penalty gave the Bears the ball in B.C. Rain territory at the 39.

Tristian Stevens then connected with Travis McGowan, who raced down the Bear sideline for the score. Noah Cincotta added the extra point to put Robertsdale up 7-0 with 4:41 to go in the first quarter.

But after that, it was all B.C. Rain until late in the third quarter. After the Red Raiders’ ensuing drive stalled at the Bear 18, B.C. Rain would get the ball back when Robertsdale turned it over on downs at the Red Raider 32.

Two plays later, the Raiders connected on a 53-yard pass play. The 2-point conversion was good to put B.C. Rain up 8-7 with 6:32 to go in the half.

It was a lead they would never relinquish scoring on a 32-yard pass just before the half with another 2-point conversion making the score 16-7 with 17.5 seconds on the clock.

A final effort by the Bears to score before the half came up empty after Romaro Settles returned the kickoff down to the Red Raider 45 and Robertsdale fought to get one second put on the clock following a 12-yard connection from Stevens to Cincotta.

But Stevens’ pass was intercepted in the endzone, leaving the score at 16-7 going into the locker room.

Robertsdale’s defense held the Red Raiders to three-and-out to start the second half, but B.C. Rain would get the ball right back on a Bear fumble at their own 34.

Three plays netted just three yards, but the Red Raiders connected on a 30-yard pass on fourth down to put the ball on the Robertsdale 1. After a penalty put the ball back at the 6, the Raiders ran it in from there and another successful 2-point conversion made the score 24-7 with 7:45 to go in the third.

Robertsdale cut the lead back to 10, set up again by a good return from Settles giving the Bears the ball at the Raider 35. Prim rushed three times for 21 yards and a Raider penalty put the ball on the B.C. Rain 5.

After Stevens hobbled off the field while attempting to get the ball back to the line of scrimmage on first down, junior Robert Barnett went behind center and ran twice, once to the Red Raider 3 and again into the endzone for a Bear score. Cincotta’s extra point cut the lead to 24-14 with 5:03 left in the third.

After the two teams traded drives without a first down, B.C. Rain took over on its own 13 and drove 87 yards, converting a third down and two fourth downs along the way, including a roughing the passer penalty which gave the Raiders a first down at the Bear 16. B.C. Rain scored three plays later on a one-yard run, again tacking on two points to make the score 32-14 with 4:07 to play.

Stevens returned to the game and led the Bears from their own 20 down to the Red Raider 17, completing four passes for 43 yards, including a fourth down completion to Barnett for 19 yards to put the ball inside the Red Raider red zone.

But three incomplete passes and a sack gave the Raiders the ball back at the 32 and they would run out the clock from there.

The Red Raiders torched the Bears for 326 yards of total offense, including 13 of 24 passing for 230 yards.

The Bears offense was held to 149 yards total offense, just 21 yards on the ground with seven negative rushing plays. Stevens was 10 of 22 passing with an interception for 128 yards. Prim led the rushing attack with 61 yards on 14 carries.

The Bears will attempt to get their first win of the season on the road at Prichard Stadium in a Thursday night contest against the LeFlore Rattlers (2-5), including a 22-10 win over B.C. Rain earlier in the season. The Raiders return to Trimmier Park to take on Baldwin County, a team they defeated 24-21 last season, but who are now 5-2 (3-2 in 6A Region 1 play) following a huge 15-14 win at home against Saraland Friday night.
