ROBERTSDALE, Alabama — Cheerleaders from Robertsdale High School, Central Baldwin Middle School and throughout the community will join forces on the field during pre-game festivities when the Golden Bears take on rival Foley Aug. 25 at J.D. Sellars Stadium.

Every year for the past several years before the first home game young residents from age 5 get the opportunity to join the cheerleaders on the field during pre-game festivities at J.D. Sellars Stadium, first participating in a camp at Robertsdale Elementary School.

This year, the tradition continued Aug. 1-3 with a new coach, Amy Stewart, following the retirement of Tracy Robbins at the end of the last school year.

A total of 55 campers participated with Robertsdale High School’s varsity and junior varsity cheerleading squads and will be joined on the field by cheerleaders from Central Baldwin Middle School, Stewart said.

“We have a very good group of girls here,” she said in an earlier interview, “and if they stay positive and stay focused, they will represent the school well in the community and in competition.”

Instruction included jumping, tumbling, cheers and chants, as well as a dance that campers will perform during the pre-game festivities. Participants will take the field at around 6:30, game time is set for 7 p.m. Younger campers participated in arts and crafts activities.

Proceeds from the August camp will help pay expenses to various competitions. Additional fundraisers throughout the year help pay for day-to-day expenses for the cheerleading squads, Stewart said.
