FAIRHOPE, Ala. – Mobile Baykeeper is celebrating the 14th Annual Publix Grandman Triathlon on Saturday, June 2 at 7 a.m. at the Fairhope Municipal Pier. Following the Grandman, Mobile Baykeeper will partner with volunteers from Altaworx and Eastern Shore Triathlon Club to co-host the Publix Jubilee Kids Triathlon on Sunday, June 3 at 7:30 a.m., which also takes place at the Fairhope Pier.

In its fourteenth year, the Grandman has become one of Fairhope’s premier annual events, attracting up to 800 racers of all ages and skill levels from the Southeast and beyond. “The Grandman is a sprint triathlon – which makes it a perfect race for every type of triathlete out there,” said Casi (kc) Callaway, race director and executive director of Mobile Baykeeper.

“We host the race on Mobile Bay to connect more citizens to our natural resources and raise awareness of our work for clean water, clean air, and healthy communities.”

Racers begin this sprint triathlon by jumping off Fairhope Pier into Mobile Bay and swimming 1/3-mile to the shore. Following the swim, racers will bike 18 miles, beginning up a steep hill before riding through downtown Fairhope and miles of rolling countryside. The race to the finish line consists of a 3.1 mile run through the streets of Fairhope and concludes along Mobile Bay at Fairhope Park.

This year marks the second year that Mobile Baykeeper will be co-hosting the Jubilee Kids Triathlon. Callaway thinks combining the two races under the same umbrella is a great selling point for families looking to spend a weekend together in Fairhope.

“Fairhope is the perfect race destination for the whole family,” said Callaway. “We really want to encourage parents to race in the Grandman on Saturday and then cheer on their children at the kid’s race on Sunday.”

Children ages 7-15 are eligible to enter the Jubilee Kid’s Tri. Participants will be divided into four different waves according to their respective age: Mullets (Ages 13-15), Flounders (Ages 11-12), Crabs (Ages 9-10), and Shrimps (Ages 7-8). Mullets and Flounders will compete in a longer course consisting of a 200-yard swim, 3-mile bike, and 1.75 mile run. Crabs and Shrimps will compete in the shorter course consisting of a 75-yard swim, 1-mile bike and 0.75 mile run.

The weekend kicks off with the Lyon Fry Cadden Health and Fitness Expo on Friday, June 1 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. The expo will feature several of the event’s sponsors and include live music by Franklin Pratt, mini yoga sessions, product samples, bone density scans, balance testing, blood pressure checkup, and a workshop for first-time participants from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.

The Publix Grandman Triathlon is a Waterkeeper Alliance Splash Series event presented nationally by Toyota. Mobile Baykeeper would like to thanks its exclusive sponsors for the 2018 race: Publix, Lyon Fry Cadden, Poarch Band of Creek Indians, Zarzaur Law, Regions Bank, Austal, and Quincy Compressors, in addition to the many other sponsors who help make this event possible.
More than 150 volunteers are needed to help make both races run as smoothly as possible.

Proceeds from the race benefit Mobile Baykeeper and myTeam Triumph Southern Alabama.
