Kim Koniar appointed to Magnolia Springs council

MAGNOLIA SPRINGS - During the month of June, Magnolia Springs council member Dotty Johnson, seat one, announced she was stepping down after serving since 2012. After a unanimous vote during the June 25 council, Kim Koniar was appointed to the vacant seat and began serving immediately. Koniar is a self-employed CPA who has called Magnolia Springs home for 23 years and has attended several council meetings through the years.

“I’m very involved in the Magnolia Springs Community Association; I’ve been the treasurer for that for several years and enjoy small town politics,” Koniar said. “Magnolia Springs is a wonderful community, and I am happy to be part of the council to help keep this area the small and welcoming local community that it is.”

Koniar has attended the majority of town public meetings for the last year trying to get a project passed concerning the safety of pedestrians crossing the bridge. Koniar offered to use her personal time to investigate ways to make crossing the bridge safer for walkers and bikers and has since been exploring multiple routes to proceed. She plans to continue to pursue this goal even more vigorously now that she is a member of the council.

“I think it’s important to give back to the community, and now that my kids are bigger I have time to do that,” Koniar said. “I had the opportunity to get to know a lot of people through the Community Association and I knew this was something that I wanted to do to help keep Magnolia Springs the wonderful town that it is.”

Koniar is married with two children, and enjoys exercising, cooking, and spending time on Magnolia River in her spare time. Politics run in her family, and she’s thrilled to uphold the tradition.

“I’m happy to keep the family name in politics,” Koniar said. “My father-in-law, John [Koniar, mayor of Foley] has always helped encourage everyone to be involved with their community and local politics, so he’s been a big help to me in making this decision to serve.”

Prior to Koniar’s appointment, Magnolia Springs Mayor Bob Holk and council presented resigning member Dotty Johnson with a certificate of appreciation to honor her for the work she’s done during her seven years of service.

“During that time she’s been an asset to the community, and someone who has not been afraid to speak out,” said Holk. “Even when it wasn’t the most popular thing to say, she always said what needed to be said and I appreciated that.”
