Lakewood Club to host 59th U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur Championship

POINT CLEAR, Ala. - The top amateur lady golfers in America are headed to the legendary Lakewood GC on September 12-17, 2020, to compete in the USGA Championship. The event marks the third USGA championship played at the historic Point Clear course. Previous tournaments took place in 1974 and 1986.

Lakewood GC, Baldwin County'soldest links course, was built by Perry Maxwell in 1947. The 36-hole tract is a member of the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail. By the tournament date, both courses, the Dogwood and Azalea, will have completed a multi-year remodel.

John Bodenhamer, USGA Senior Managing Director of Championships, remarked, “We are confident that the Dogwood course will provide the ultimate test for competitors as well as a wonderful championship experience outside the ropes.”

Niall Fraser, Director of Golf at Lakewood, added, “The Lakewood club, in partnership with the Grand Hotel Resort & Spa, is thrilled to host our third USGA Championship. The event is near to our hearts and we look forward to continuing to be a part of this championship’s prestigious history.”

This is the eighth championship played in Alabama. Most recently, 2018’s U.S. Women’s Open, the Heart of Dixie, was contested at Shoal Creek. The blazing finish came down to a four-hole playoff and was won by Ariya Jutanugarm.

Even though the event doesn’t take place until 2020, go ahead and mark your calendars because you won’t want to miss this exciting tournament.
