Marjorie Younce Snook Public Library in Summerdale Presents the 2019 Summer Reading Program: A Universe of Stories

Posted

A Universe of Stories is the theme for the 2019 Summer Reading Program at Marjorie Younce Snook Public Library in Summerdale. It was chosen because this year marks the 50th anniversary of man’s first steps on the moon in 1969. The first Luna Landing is a great achievement of the United States of America. On July 16, 1969 a rocket carrying three astronauts, Neil Armstrong, Edwin ‘Buzz’ Aldrin and Michael Collins, blasted off for the moon. On July 20, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin landed a Luna module on the surface of the moon, becoming the first men to step foot onto the moons’ surface. Michael Collins stayed with the rocket as it orbited the moon.

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be a space explorer? This is a question children asked back in 1969 as they sat in wonder and watched the first lunar landing. Today’s children are asking the same questions about our planet, space exploration and what lies beyond our galaxy. The Marjorie Younce Snook Public Library in Summerdale has a great selection of books on space exploration, our solar system, our planet, and is offering an opportunity through the Summer Reading Program for today’s children to expand their minds through books.

This year, the Marjorie Younce Snook Public Library will be issuing a special challenge to all children. Any child, pre-teen, and teen who reads 100 books between June 1 and August 1 will receive a special prize at the end of the reading challenge. Books of all type, magazines, eBooks, poetry, mystery, adventure, are all considered. A special tracking form will be issued to all participating children & teens.

The Marjorie Younce Snook Public Library in Summerdale proudly introduces the 2019 Summer Reading Program: A Universe of Stories. Every Tuesday from 10 a.m. to noon there will be guest entertainers, featured readers, arts & crafts and refreshments at the library.

The June schedule is:

June 4, 10 a.m. – Noon, Animal Trainer John Hamm will help us kick off the Summer Reading Program. Hamm will have a variety of furry friends for the children to hold. Be prepared to get up close and personal with animals from all over the world! This program doesn’t just lecture but involves the children, giving them a chance to work with the animals!

June 11, 10 a.m. – Noon, Polka & Magic with Mike Schneider. The children will get a kick out of Uncle Mike's jokes and catchy sing-along polka songs. No one goes home without doing the "Chicken Dance" and a special polka version of "Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes."

June 18, 10 a.m. – Noon, Alligator Alley. Various sizes of alligators will be available for the children to hold and view. This is the perfect program for a hands-on opportunity to learn about wildlife and many fascinating facts about these incredible creatures.

June 25, 10 a.m. – Noon, “The Magic Guy” Skip Cain. Join us for a high-energy, interactive show filled with magic, comedy, and balloon sculptures from long-time community favorite, Skip Cain! This will also be the Grand Finale Party, in which the children enjoy hot dogs and chips, a special trip to the Ice Cream Van, face painting and a variety of arts and crafts.

Following each presentation, featured readers from around the community will read stories about our planet, space exploration and our universe, keeping with this year’s theme, and the children will do special arts & crafts projects.
