Mary Virginia Branch Altherr, a resident of Point Clear and longtime citizen of Alabama, died May 24, 2017.

She was born in Kokomo, Indiana, on May 26, 1928. A homemaker and writer, she published four novels and a collection of short stories under the pen name, M.V. Branch.

She was a member of St. Francis at the Point, Baldwin County Pensters and several writing groups as well as an inactive member of P.E.O. Sorority and Lakewood Ladies Golf Association.

In past years, she was an avid bridge player and a volunteer tutor with the Literacy Council. While living in Huntsville, Alabama, she was a volunteer at Huntsville Hospital and a Red Cross worker for the Jones Valley School clinic.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 67 years, Jack Richard Altherr Sr.; and her son, Jeffrey Lee Altherr.

Survivors include sons, Jack Richard Altherr Jr. of Greensboro, Georgia and Joel Tracy Altherr of Gainesville, Georgia; daughter-in-law, Lucy Jordan Altherr (Jack) of Greensboro, Georgia; granddaughters, Carrie Altherr Jennings (Hank) of Roswell, Georgia and Lisa Bell (Jason) of Prairie du Sac, Wisconsin; grandson, Jonathan Richard Altherr of Athens, Georgia; great-granddaughters, Julia Bell of Prairie du Sac, Wisconsin, Audrey Jennings of Roswell, Georgia and Caleigh Nicks of Tomball, Texas; great-grandson, Henry Jennings of Roswell, Georgia; and sister, Shirley Maksymicz (Michael) of Beverly Hills, Florida.

A memorial service will be held Friday, June 2, 2017 at 3 p.m. at St. Francis at the Point, Point Clear.

The family will have a private graveside service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Fairhope Library or St. Francis at the Point.
