• Leopards’ late rally sinks Admirals’ homecoming quest

DAPHNE, Ala. — Bayside’s offense came out with a slashing running attack peppered with effective passing to go 78 yards and take the early lead over top-ranked Mobile Christian while the Admirals defense kept the Leopards’ attack at bay into the fourth quarter at Freedom Field Friday.

But a couple of big plays went the Leopard’s way and the Admirals could not respond in time as MCS took the Class 3A Region 1 victory at Bayside Academy.

The loss was even tougher after the Admirals had dedicated the game, designated “True-Blue Night” to and in honor of assistant coach Mark Lasseter who collapsed earlier in the week and had surgery the day of the game.

“I couldn’t be more proud of the effort and fight our kids showed tonight,” said BA head coach Phil Lazenby. “And I know Mark would feel the same way. We made some mistakes but the effort was there and just very proud of them.”

Lasseter’s surgery before the game Friday was reported as successful and the entire community was hoping for a quick and full recovery.

“We’re just thankful that he’s doing as well as he is and hope he continues to get better and can get back here soon with us. We’re grateful for all the prayers from everywhere and I know he appreciates all the care and concern expressed for him.”

Trailing 20-17, the Admirals had the Leopards pinned with a fourth-and-24-yards to go and a chance to retake the lead. But a screen pass to Sam Ladner turned into a 31-yard touchdown run and the final 10-point margin.

Matt Kalifeh finished Bayside’s first drive with a 1-yard quarterback sneek TD and Kalifeh later connected with Nathan Cook for a 55-yard TD pass. The Leopards added two TDs but a blocked PAT by Trevor Mason kept the Admirals ahead 14-13 and Mac Douglas added a 28-yard field goal for a 17-13 BA lead at halftime.

Darryl Crenshaw also scored for MCS on a 19-yard run in the Leopards’ 14-point second half to take the lead 20-17 in the third quarter.

Ansleigh Dailey was named 2017 Bayside Homecoming Queen at halftime. Bayside will travel to Excel this Friday.
