ELBERTA – Elberta Elementary School hit it big in the National Garden Clubs, Inc. Smokey Bear and Woodsy Owl Poster Contest, with five students winning awards.

The annual contest is sponsored by local Garden Clubs, and Fairhope Garden Club stepped in to hold the contest and involve students in the Elberta Elementary School After School Program. Students in the 1st-5th grades are welcome to enter the contest, which involves teaching students about fire safety and prevention.

The contest rules state: “The U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service and the National Garden Clubs, Inc. are giving students the opportunity to demonstrate through original drawings of Smokey Bear or Woodsy Owl their understanding of wildfire prevention and basic environmental conservation principles.”

Winners from Elberta Elementary are: 1st grade, Allie Rae McLain, 2nd place; 2nd grade, Karlie Isakson (absent), 3rd place; 3rd grade, Clara Porter, 3rd place; 4th grade, Addison Breazeale, 2nd place; and 5th grade, Savannah Williams, 3rd place.

On April 17, the Fairhope Garden Club held an award program within the Elberta Elementary School cafeteria where they presented the winners with a special certificate and some free doughnuts. The club also presented a special award to Elberta Elementary teacher Jill Jordan for the Elberta Junior Garden Club, 1st place Garden Club of Alabama.
