New road, Koniar Way, now open

FOLEY - Foley’s newest road is now open, and it’s named in honor of former Mayor John Koniar for his 40 years of public service. Koniar Way runs north/south connecting County Road 20 and Kenny Stabler Boulevard, offering a quick ride between the Sports Tourism Complex and the Coastal Alabama Farmers and Fishermen’s Market.

The road’s name was announced at the Oct. 19, 2020 council meeting, Koniar’s final council as mayor.

“We talked to all the council about this and if it should be street, avenue, what, and they said they think it needs to be Koniar Way,” said Mayor Ralph Hellmich during the presentation. “The reason why is because he had a way of handling government and working with everybody, and we felt that was most appropriate … John has his opinion but he likes for everybody to work together, and it’s something that we’ve all learned from here in Foley. I think it makes our city better.”

Plans to extend Koniar Way were originally pushed back at the start of 2020 to allow for the connection of Pride Drive North to South Pecan Street. At the time Pecan Street was a higher priority due to OWA’s planned RV Park. When the RV Park schedule got pushed back for an undetermined amount of time, Foley council decided to reprioritize Koniar Way. Though sidewalks are not part of the current Koniar Way project, the city plans to revisit the possibility in the future.
