During the Feb. 19 city council meeting, Mayor John Koniar presented a proclamation to Dr. Bill Lawrence, principal of Foley Elementary School, declaring March 2 to Read Across America. The NEA’s Read Across America is a national celebration that takes place on Dr. Seuss’s birthday, March 2, and promotes reading and adult involvement in the education of the community’s students. “I call on the citizens of Foley, Alabama, to assure that every child is in a safe place reading together with a caring adult on March 2,” stated Koniar. “And be it further resolved that I enthusiastically endorse NEA’s Read Across America and recommit our community to engage in programs and activities to make America’s children the best readers in the world.”
