ROBERTSDALE, Alabama — The Robertsdale High School Alumni Association is continuing with plans to raffle off a quilt and is asking for scholarship donations after canceling the 2021 Tea Party.

Since around 500 ladies were expected to attend the annual event, with the current social distancing guidelines in place, it was decided in December to cancel this year’s event, said Evelyn Lowery, who has organized the event since its inception 13 years ago.

“We just couldn’t figure out a way to do it and keep everybody safe,” she said. “We thought about possibly splitting it up and having a morning tea and an afternoon tea, but we just weren’t able to work that out.”

This year’s event was to be one of the kickoff events for Robertsdale’s Centennial Celebration. Generally held the last Saturday in February, the event would have coincided with the 100th anniversary of Robertsdale’s first council meeting in February of 1921.

The annual event always includes a quilt raffle and since a quilt made by The Ole Ladies Quilting Circle has already been donated, Lowery said, they are moving forward with plans to raffle off the quilt.

Tickets are $1 each, or five for $6. The drawing is set to be held on the day the Tea Party was to be held, Saturday, Feb. 27.

The quilt follows the theme of Robertsdale’s 100th anniversary, she said, and includes several landmarks and historical depictions.

“All of our hostesses will be selling tickets,” Lowery said. “We are also encouraging everyone to make a donation so we can continue to provide scholarships to Robertsdale High School students.”

Lowery said anyone who wants information about how to purchase tickets can contact her at 251-978-4575. Donations can be made to the RHS Alumni Association’s Post Office Box at P.O. Box 1458, Robertsdale, AL 36567.

Last year’s 12th Annual Tea Party, held March 7, 2020, “Hats Off To Disney,” featured more than 500 guests and included 57 tables with five displays that took up two tables. Each table represented a Disney Theme, an attraction to one of Disney’s theme parks, a Disney movie or Disney-sponsored activity.

Another fundraiser, the Annual Forks and Spoons Tasting Spree at the PZK Hall in Robertsdale, was canceled this past October. This year’s fundraiser has also been canceled, Lowery said.

In May of 2020, the group handed out 16 scholarships to Robertsdale High School seniors at the Honeybee Park pavilion in Robertsdale.
